Hualin Temple
Hualin Temple is situated in Changshou West Road, Hualin Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Guangzhou. In the Liang Dynasty, a master Indian monk Bodhidharma came to China and built a nunnery to help spread Buddhism. Bodhidharma travelled and introduced Buddhism from Nanjing to Shaolin Temple on Songshan Mountain. He had a deep influence on Buddhism and its philosophy in China.
In order to remember him, people call the place he landed as the "First Landing Place of The Westerners" and called the nunnery Xilai Nunnery. It is a Buddhist temple which has survived the Sui, Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties. In the Qing Dynasty, the nunnery got another name Hualin Temple. At that time, people built 500 arhat statues, each of which has a different expression.
In 2005, a statue of the ancient Buddhist monk Bodhidharma was installed in Hualin Temple. The statue is 6.88 meters high and weighs 10 tons. Said to be the largest Bodhidharma statue, it was built by a factory in Foshan to commemorate the Indian monk Bodhidharma. Now it is a popular place for local citizens to worship Buddha and pray for a good life.
