The Sanyuanli Anti-British Invasion Museum

The Sanyuanli Anti-British Invasion Museum

The Sanyuanli Anti-British Invasion Museum is located in the ancient Sanyuan Temple in Guangzhou. If was originally a Taoist temple with two courtyards and one halfway for worshipping the North Emperor.

People who know about Chinese history are familiar will the famous war with Britain. After the Opium War broke out in June 1840, the British invaders launched many campaigns against Southeast China's coastal areas. In May 1841, the British army approached Guangzhou City and seized hold of emplacements in the north of the city. On the morning of May 29, the British Army plundered Sanyuanli. The entire village quickly gathered on the level ground in front of the ancient temple. They decided to fight and allied with the crowd in No. 103 Township. They fought together under the banner of the Pingying Regiment. First, they lured the British to Niulangang, where nearly 1, 000 people hid. They took the advantage of some foothills and quickly assaulted the enemy, killing over 200 soldiers. The surrounded British fled helter-skelter until a reinforcing army arrived. The Chinese troops chased after them and besieged their camp. The British army was forced back to the sea.

The Battle of Resistance against the British Army in Sanyuanli was the first victory of a spontaneous fight by Chinese people. It demonstrated the valour of Chinese people in the fight against imperialism and ushered in the democratic revolution. After the People's Republic of China was founded, the Guangzhou Municipal Government renovated the temple and restored it to its original condition. Now, it has become a museum that showcases the history of the Sanyuanli people's resistance against the British invasion.
