Xinhui Private Day Tour from Guangzhou or Shenzhen

PRIVATE CULTURAL DAY TOUR
Sanwui Heritage, Xinhui Old Town and Guifeng Mountain

Discover a side of Xinhui, Jiangmen that most standard tours overlook. This private day trip combines the historic centre of Xinhui, its Confucian educational heritage, its connections with overseas Chinese communities and the green landscape of Guifeng Mountain.

The standard itinerary visits Xinhui Confucian Temple and Museum, Mashan Park, Xinhui Academy and Guifeng Mountain National Forest Park. The afternoon can instead be changed to Bird Paradise, Liang Qichao's former residence, Xinhui Chenpi Village or a private ancestral roots visit.

Start: 9:00 AM
Duration: About 8-9 hours
Tour Type: Private only
Best Days: Tuesday-Friday

Why Is Xinhui Also Called Sanwui or Sunwui?

Xinhui was historically known as Gangzhou. Together with Taishan, Kaiping and Enping, it formed the region traditionally called Siyi, meaning the Four Counties. In overseas Chinese communities, the same region may also appear in English as See Yup or Sze Yup. Heshan was later added to form the wider Wuyi, or Five Counties, region.

Older English-language documents may spell Xinhui as Sanwui, San Wui, Sunwui or Sin-hoei. San Wui remains familiar to many Chinese families in Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, Australia, Canada and the United States. Since the late 1970s, the Hanyu Pinyin spelling Xinhui has become the standard international form.

Why Choose This Xinhui Day Tour?

Flexible Private Route

STANDARD ITINERARY

Xinhui Old Town and Guifeng Mountain

This schedule is designed for departure from a centrally located Guangzhou hotel. Exact times may change according to traffic, weather, opening arrangements and the pace of your group.

9:00 AM

Hotel Pickup in Central Guangzhou

Meet your private guide at your hotel and travel west towards Xinhui. The drive normally takes approximately 1.5 hours, although the actual journey depends on your hotel location and road conditions.

Morning

1. Xinhui Confucian Temple and Xinhui Museum

Begin at the Xinhui Confucian Temple, also known as Xinhui Xuegong. The complex now houses Xinhui Museum and introduces the district's history, archaeology, educational traditions, local scholars and cultural identity.

Your guide will explain why Confucian temples were not simply religious buildings. They were closely connected with education, the imperial examination system and the social position of scholars in traditional China.

Morning

2. Mashan Park and the Historic Centre of Xinhui

Continue through Mashan Park and the surrounding historic urban area. This local walk helps you understand the location of the former county town, its public spaces and the relationship between its educational buildings and present-day Huicheng.

The guide will introduce how Xinhui developed from an old county town into part of modern Jiangmen while retaining a cultural identity distinct from central Jiangmen.

Morning

3. Xinhui Academy

Visit the restored Xinhui Academy, or Xinhui Shuyuan, a historic educational building with grey-brick walls, traditional courtyards and architectural decoration associated with Lingnan schools.

This stop adds another layer to the story of education in Xinhui. The Confucian Temple represented the traditional official system, while the academy reflects the later development of local schools and changing approaches to education.

Lunch

Lunch in a Long-Established Xinhui Teahouse

Have lunch in a local teahouse located in a building dating from the 1980s. It was once one of the first places visited by some overseas Chinese returning to Xinhui and remains a useful place from which to observe the appearance of the old town.

This is a local dining stop rather than a formal banquet. The guide will help select suitable dishes. Guests pay for their own food and drinks and also cover the guide's meal.

Afternoon

4. Guifeng Mountain National Forest Park

In the afternoon, continue to Guifeng Mountain. It plays a role in Xinhui similar to Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou: a green public space where local residents walk, exercise, meet friends and escape the dense urban area.

The standard visit uses the sightseeing vehicle and includes relaxed walking through the wooded landscape. A long climb to the mountain summit is not required. The exact walking route can be adjusted according to the weather, fitness and interests of the group.

There is no general admission charge for the standard route. The sightseeing vehicle costs approximately RMB 15 per person. Guests pay for their own sightseeing vehicle tickets and one additional ticket for the guide.

5-6 PM

Return to Your Guangzhou Hotel

Leave Xinhui in the late afternoon and normally arrive at your Guangzhou hotel between approximately 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. The return time may be later during heavy traffic, weekends or public holidays.

CUSTOMISE YOUR AFTERNOON

Alternative Xinhui Day Tour Routes

Choose one afternoon theme. These alternatives replace Guifeng Mountain rather than being added to the standard route.

OPTION A - HISTORY AND FOOD CULTURE

Liang Qichao's Former Residence and Xinhui Chenpi Village

Visit the birthplace and former residence of Liang Qichao, one of the most influential Chinese thinkers, writers and political reformers of the late Qing and early Republican periods.

Continue to a Xinhui chenpi centre to learn why dried Xinhui mandarin peel became the district's best-known agricultural product. Tea tasting or purchases are optional and are not compulsory parts of the tour.

OPTION B - WETLAND AND BIRDS

Xinhui Bird Paradise

Take a boat through the wetland surrounding the famous banyan-tree habitat associated with the Chinese essay Birds' Paradise. The number and activity of birds vary according to the season, weather, water level and time of day, so wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

The estimated adult admission and boat package is approximately RMB 50 to RMB 65 per person, depending on the operating route and current ticket arrangement.

Guests are also responsible for the guide's adult admission and boat ticket. For one to six guests, the estimated total for all guest tickets plus one guide ticket is approximately RMB 100 to RMB 455. The exact ticket price should be reconfirmed before the tour.

OPTION C - FAMILY HISTORY

Xinhui Ancestral Roots and Village Visit

This option is intended for Chinese, overseas Chinese and mixed-heritage families whose ancestors came from Xinhui, Sanwui or the wider Siyi region.

Depending on the available information, the afternoon may be used to locate an ancestral village, ancestral hall, family-name settlement, former home area or cemetery. Research and village arrangements must begin before the booking is confirmed.

OPTIONAL AFTERNOON

Liang Qichao and Modern Chinese History

Liang Qichao was born in Xinhui and became an important writer, educator, political reformer and advocate of intellectual change. His life also connects Xinhui with Hong Kong, Japan and the wider overseas Chinese world.

This route is especially suitable for visitors interested in modern Chinese history, education, journalism, nationalism and the political transformation from the Qing dynasty to the Republic of China.

OPTIONAL AFTERNOON

Xinhui Bird Paradise

Bird Paradise is the best-known international attraction in Xinhui. Its wetland, banyan trees, waterways and bird habitat make it suitable for families and visitors primarily interested in nature.

It can replace Guifeng Mountain, but it is not compulsory. Visitors who prefer local history, everyday urban life and fewer commercial attractions may find the standard old-town and Guifeng Mountain route more rewarding.

Which Days Are Best for a Xinhui Tour?

Tuesday to Friday is the most comfortable time for this itinerary. Visitor numbers are usually lower than at the weekend, and the museums and historic educational buildings are normally open.

Saturday and Sunday are also possible, although Guifeng Mountain, restaurants and popular attractions may be busier.

The standard historical route is not recommended on Monday. Xinhui Confucian Temple and Museum, Xinhui Academy, Liang Qichao's former residence and some other cultural venues are closed or may not admit visitors. A Monday nature-based itinerary can be discussed separately.

ANCESTRAL ROOTS

Private Xinhui Roots Tour for Overseas Chinese Families

Many overseas family records use historical names rather than the modern spelling Xinhui. Documents may refer to Sanwui, San Wui, Sunwui, Siyi, See Yup, Sze Yup or the broader Wuyi region.

Before planning a roots visit, please provide as much of the following information as possible:

Chinese surname and full ancestral name
Village or town name in Chinese characters
Old letters, certificates or family records
Names of relatives who remained in China
Approximate year of migration
Photographs of ancestral halls or tomb inscriptions

Locating a village cannot be guaranteed when the original information is incomplete or has been recorded only in an old dialect spelling. The final route may also need to replace part of the standard old-town itinerary depending on the village's location.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Xinhui Private Tour FAQ

Is Xinhui worth visiting on a day trip from Guangzhou?
Yes. Xinhui offers a different experience from central Guangzhou, combining a historic county town, Confucian education, overseas Chinese history, local food culture and forest scenery.
Is Xinhui the same place as Sanwui or Sunwui?
Yes. Sanwui, San Wui and Sunwui are older romanised forms found in overseas Chinese organisations, immigration records, family documents and historical maps. Xinhui is the present standard Hanyu Pinyin spelling.
Is Xinhui part of Jiangmen?
Yes. Xinhui is now an administrative district of Jiangmen, but it has its own long history, dialect, old town and cultural identity. A Xinhui day tour is therefore more specific than a general Jiangmen city tour.
Can the tour start from Shenzhen?
Yes. Pickup can be arranged at Shenzhen Futian Port for an additional USD $50 per private group. The exact meeting and return times will be confirmed separately.
Does the standard tour include Xinhui Bird Paradise?
No. The standard route combines the historic centre with Guifeng Mountain. Bird Paradise can replace Guifeng Mountain when birds, wetlands and boat sightseeing are more important to your group.
Are there entrance fees on the standard itinerary?
The standard morning heritage sites do not require an admission fee. At Guifeng Mountain, the sightseeing vehicle costs approximately RMB 15 per person. Guests pay for their own tickets and one additional ticket for the guide.
Is lunch included?
No. Guests pay for their own meals and drinks and also cover the guide's lunch. The guide will assist with ordering and choosing suitable local dishes.
Does Guifeng Mountain require a difficult climb?
No. The standard visit uses the sightseeing vehicle and relaxed walking. A long summit climb is not required unless it is requested and there is sufficient time.
Can you help me find my family's ancestral village in Xinhui?
A roots visit can be arranged when you provide useful information in advance, preferably including Chinese characters, the family surname, village name, old letters or migration records. Locating a specific village cannot be guaranteed without sufficient information.
Why is Monday not recommended?
Xinhui Museum, the Confucian Temple, Xinhui Academy, Liang Qichao's former residence and several other cultural venues are closed or may restrict access on Mondays. Tuesday to Friday provides the most complete and comfortable itinerary.
