Chikan, a town with a history of over 350 years, was built in the Qing Dynasty during the reign of Shunzhi. The name Chikan means 'high land with red sod'. lt is surrounded by rivers and trees. There are around 600 Qilou-style shophouses, most of which were built at the beginning of the  20th  century by overseas Chinese from the Guan and Situ Clans. The Qilou-style streets are considered the best-preserved buildings of this type in the area. Local specialties are sold  in the streets. It is a good place to experience local life! It's a shame Chikan is now closed for renovations, as it would have been a really nice old town to explore too.
