Shaoguan Danxia Mountains Geopark

Danxia Mountains (Danxia Shan or Mount Danxia) is located in the northeastern suburbs of ShaoguanCity, Guangdong Province, it is named after the geomorphic features. Danxia Mountains (Danxia Shan or Mount Danxia) takes 3 hours and a half drive from Guangzhou. It covers an area of 290 square kilometers, which  is one of the most famous mountains and regarded as the most beautiful scenery in Guangdong Province. Since 1988, Danxia Mountains (Danxia Shan or Mount Danxia) has been successively appointed as National Scenic Spot, National Natural Protection Zone for Geology and Geomorphology in China, Grade AAAA National Tourist Spot, and National Geological Park of China.

Gaungdong Shaoguan Danxia Mountains | Dan Xia Shan | Mount DanxiaThe highest peak of Danxia Mountains (Danxia Shan or Mount Danxia) is 409 meters, it’s neither the highest nor the biggest mountain while compared to the famous mountains. However, it combines the rare of Mt. Huangshan, the sharp of Mt. Huashan and the beauty of Guilin. The scenic spot can be divided into the upper, middle, lower levers and Jinjiang scenic area, Xianglong Lake and Yangyuan Mountain. There are three peaks in the upper lever, the center of the middle lever is Biezhuan Temple and the lower lever Jinshi Rock. When monk Dangui opened up the Beichuan Temple in Danxia Mountains (Danxia Shan or Mount Danxia) 300 years ago, he picked out twelve sceneries, namely twelve sceneries in Danxia, including Jin Shui Tan Sheng, Yu Tai Shuang Qi, Jie Ge Chen Zhong, Dan Ti Tie Suo, Duo Shi Zhao Xi, Zhu Po Yan YuShuang Zhao Bi He, Ru Quan Chuan Liu, Lei Ding Fu Tu, Hong Qiao Yong Cui, Pian Lin Qiu Yue.

The stones have been formed over the eons by nature, most of them take the shape of the human body, birds and even animals. The Yangyuan Rock (Male Organ), Yinyuan Rock (Female Organ), Wangfu Rock (Longing for Husband to Return)  and Longlin Rock are regarded as the ''Four Beauties of Danxia Mountains (Danxia Shan or Mount Danxia)''.The numerous stones and peaks are rhythmically interspersed among the scenic spot which makes a sculpture garden of red sandstone rocks. Set against the blue sky, white clouds, jade waters, green trees, and the colorful algae, the mountain becomes a picturesque painting.

Danxia Mountains (Danxia Shan or Mount Danxia) has a temperate climate and fully rain, so there are varieties of plants in it, especially semitropics evergreen broad-leaved forest. Experts say that the number of famous trees whose age were above 100 is twenty-eight, the trees whose age were above 300 is fourteen. The phoenix tree in Danxia is the most famous flower in the world, it has many types, such as Goering cymbidium, Cymbidium kanran, Michelia alba, Cymbidium sinense, Cymbidium faberi and so on.

There are more than 80 sites of cavern temple including the Beichuan Buddhist Temple, where scholars and writers created many legends, stories, poems and petroglyph with great historic and cultural value.

How to get there

  • Take subway line 2 and get off at Guangzhou South Railway Station. Take railway to Shaoguan (韶关) Station and take line Danxia Moutain(丹霞山线). The journey will take about 4 hours.

  • Drive to Danxia Mounatin from Guangzhou takes about 3.5 hours.
