Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the contributions of Sun Zhongshan, the great predecessor of the Chinese revolution for democracy. It is a memorial construction donated by the people in Guangzhou and the overseas Chinese and is listed as one of the first-class cultural relics in Guangdong Province. It is a magnificent building in the shape of an octagon and an important place for large scale meetings and performance.
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou was built across a span of 71 meters and fascinating enough, without a single pillar. The hall was designed by Lu Yanzhi and was built with funds raised by local and overseas Chinese people in memory of Sun Yat-sen. Construction work commenced in 1929 and completed in October 1931.
The audience house inside the memorial hall, crowned with a domed glass roof, is an outstanding construction that is, by itself, famous in the world of architecture. Behind the hall stands Zhongshan Monument rising from atop Yuexiu Mountain, so remarkable and stately that it seems to go through the sky.
The central copula of the octagonal pavilion of the Zhongshan Memorial Hall is surrounded by four decorated double-eaves. The whole construction is majestic and rich in Chinese traditional design. Inside the hall, ancient trees and pillars covered with lifelike cranes combine to form a glorious scene. Surrounding it, yellow walls and red pillars decorated with blue glazed tiles shine in the sun, overwhelming with splendor and solemnity.
In front of the memorial hall stands an impressive statue of Mr. Sun Zhongshan, and hanging above the main door is a golden slab with four Chinese characters for "Tian Xia Wei Gong" [the world is for the people] written by Sun Yat-sen himself. The statue and the golden slab together form a profound scene reminding visitors of the brilliant life of this great man.
Before the liberation, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall had already been badly damaged due to a lack of upkeep. Since then, our government has appropriated funds several times to repair it. Finally, in 1998, a completely renewed memorial hall was reopened after a careful restoration. The memorial hall and the courtyard together cover an area of 62,000 square meters, 6,600 of which contain the expansive main building.
